There are a couple of things brewing right now that I want to make you aware of so you can consider how you can engage the mission that we are on together.
1. Welcome back FSCC students: On Sunday afternoon, January 13 we planning on welcoming about 170 FSCC students back to Fort Scott by handing them goody bags with cookies, coupons and other helpful stuff. Larry has received permission from the administration to do this, we just need to band together and make it happen.
Needs:
- cookie bakers
- someone with good people skills to obtain some coupons from local merchants
- gift bag assemblers
- prayer warriors who will pray for the outreach
- Smiling happy servants who will distribute the bags and engage the students in conversation
2. Welcome to Fort Scott: I have a few addresses of homes where people have moved to Fort Scott from another town. I would like to provide a similar welcome packet to anyone who moves into Fort Scott. The needs are similar to the student outreach.
3. Alpha: We are about 8 weeks from launching an Alpha course. I want to assemble a team of people to work with me in making this Alpha happen. This course is not open to members of the church unless you are serving in some capacity, or you have guests on the course.
Needs:
- administrative types who can help in planning and organizing
- servants who are willing to do whatever they are asked to do
- childcare workers
- Prayer warriors who will pray throughout the course
- table leaders who will get to know people and lead discussion
- hospitality people who know what makes people feel welcomed in a foreign environment
Just a report on our Christmas giving venture. Over the past two weeks we collected canned goods and some cash for helping needy families here in Fort Scott. We collected about $80 to buy gifts for kids to adopt through the Beacon. Unfortunately, by Monday all of the kids were taken so they directed me to Care-4-All medical supply. They were collecting gifts for kids 14-18 years of age. I was able to get 8 gifts from Walmart and Care-4-All will distribute them. Our food collection went a rye as well. I stopped by the Beacon today to deliver the food, but they were already out making their deliveries. Just as I was getting to the Beacon I receive a phone call from a woman who was in need of groceries, so I took the canned goods that we collected to her. Other than nearly being attacked by her huge dog, I think things went pretty well.
In a related item, I got a call from Brent Crays yesterday that a woman had come to his shop in need of food. We typically give up to $50 in groceries on a call like this, and I would normally just take care of the errand myself, but I called Angela Mix. Angela was able to take Becky shopping and helped her stay on her budgeted amount.
I would say that is the way the church is supposed to function. No one person doing all of the ministry, but each of us working together to see that the job gets done.
